International Seaweed Symposium 2025

The International Seaweed Association is pleased to present the 25th anniversary of the International Seaweed Symposium in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, and you are invited!

Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, is located on the traditional territories of the Lək̓ʷəŋən (Songhees) and Xwsepsum(Esquimalt) and W̱SÁNEĆ Nations (Saanich Peninsula). The theme of our next conference aims to honour and acknowledge the rich history and connection Indigenous Peoples have had with seaweed for millennia while paying tribute to the innovators of seaweed research, who have laid the foundation for advancements in seaweed technology which we continue to build upon today and develop into the future.

British Columbia boasts a diverse and extensive array of seaweeds, with approximately 600 species of seaweeds and 30 species of kelp. The unique geography, characterized by mountainous coastlines, fjords, and small islets, combined with the cold, nutrient-rich waters of the Pacific Northwest, create an ideal environment for temperate seaweeds to inhabit and diversify.
