Learn Rúben's Story

Rúben Marques is a dedicated marine biologist specializing in seaweed aquaculture, plant physiology, and sustainable cultivation systems. With a BSc in Biology from the University of Aveiro, Portugal (2017), Rúben began his career at ALGAplus (Ílhavo, Portugal), where he gained valuable experience in seaweed farming and integrated aquaculture systems.

Rúben’s academic achievements include impactful research projects such as “Optimization of Porphyra dioica conchocelis growth and conchosporangia maturation” during his undergraduate internship and “Effects of light on the photobiology and growth of the commercially valuable macroalga Codium tomentosum” as part of his MSc in Marine Biology at the University of Aveiro (2019). These works reflect his in-depth expertise in integrated multitrophic aquaculture (IMTA), photophysiology, and innovative cultivation systems.

After completing his MSc, Rúben continued his research on Codium tomentosum as a fellow on the FCT-funded CtLight project, where he refined cultivation methods for this economically significant species.

Currently, Rúben is pursuing a PhD at the Scottish Association for Marine Science, University of Highlands and Islands (Scotland, UK). His research, “Material Development for Global Seaweed Cultivation,” focuses on how the surface characteristics of cultivation substrates influence the settlement, development, and attachment of North Atlantic seaweeds. Concentrating on species such as dulse (Palmaria palmata) and kelps (Saccharina latissima and Alaria esculenta), his work aims to advance sustainable aquaculture practices and develop innovative materials for seaweed cultivation on a global scale.

Beyond academia, Rúben’s work bridges research and industry, fostering sustainable seaweed aquaculture practices and promoting the integration of seaweed into global markets, including food, feed, and bioeconomy sectors. He is committed to driving innovation in marine science while contributing to the sustainable growth of the blue economy.

Rúben Marques is a forward-thinking marine biologist, advancing seaweed aquaculture through cutting-edge research and collaboration, ensuring a sustainable future for marine resources and industries.
